The Petit Train Jaune (Little Yellow Train)

Le Petit TrainThe Petit Train Jaune (Little Yellow Train) climbs into the Pyrenees and offers superb views from its narrow gauge carriages. As you descend the Têt Valley from La Cerdagne, along the improved N116, you’ll notice the impressive viaducts and bridges of a metre-gauge railway line – a remarkable piece of engineering which allows Le Petit Train Jaune to runs along a 63km route from Villefranche-de-Conflent (427m) to the highest station in the Cerdagne (and for SNCF in all France) at Bolquère/Eyne (1592m), a climb of getting on for 4,000 ft. The red and yellow train, nicknamed le canari, provides an exciting scenic ride, especially if you sit in one of the open flat-cars.

The Petit Train Jaune runs between Villefrance-de-Conflent and Latour-de-Carol. Best approached from Perpignan via the N116.

It’s well worth a visit as the scenery is beautiful and it’s a great way to travel.

Tip – Although expensive for a family, there is some dramatic scenery here. The cost can be managed if you don’t go all the way. The best scenery is towards the Mediterranean.
For the children: 63km is a long way to sit on a train – don’t travel the whole distance and have a break part way along to make a day of it.

General Info: Tel Enquiries: 08 92 35 35 35. €34 Euros return fare for the whole 63km.
