Other artist including Andre Derain worked here under Matisse’s influence and were dubbed fauves (wild beast) for their wild experiment with colour. Art galleries and souvenir shops now fill the cobbled streets, but this small fishing port has changed surprisingly little since then, with anchovies still its main business. Three salting houses are evidence of this tradition.

The Eglise Notre-Dame-des-Anges on Collioure’s quayside was rebuilt in the 17th century to replace the church that was destroyed by Vauban. A former lighthouse was incorporated as belltower. Inside the church are not fewer than five Baroque altarpieces by Joseph Sunyer and other Catalan masters of the genre.
Be warned that Collioure is extremely popular in July and August, with visitors cramming the streets. Long queues of traffic are possible, too, though the building of another route, the D86, has helped to ease congestion.

• There is not doubts that some cafes are made for coffee; others for meeting up with friends and others to sit and read. Café terrace on Place de la République are made for people-watching: where you can spend all day – sitting, drinking coffee after coffee, carefully observing everyone who is in the cafe and who walks by a spacious pastel-coloured façades square. Follow the sun through the day by changing terrace.
  Place de la République also host a morning produce market.
• The funerary cloister Saint Jean is the oldest example of funerary cloister preserved in France and one of the oldest and biggest in Europe. The chapel, which contains the most amazing contemporary stained glass windows (by American artist Shirley Jaffe) that bathes the interior in varying technicolor hues.
• Shopping at Marché Cassanyes, at Place Cassanyes, (daily, 7.30am to 1.30pm). This market is an institution on the city of Perpignan, typical of the ethnic mix of a city that has always welcomed immigrants and refugees. It has between 80 and 140 shops (food, clothing, cosmetics, shoes, jewelry, etc)
• Hyacinthe Rigaud, Maillol, Dufy, Picasso, Grau-Garriga and Miró at the Musée Hyacinthe Rigaud, a fine-art museum in an beautiful 18th century townhouse. Most of the artists drawn to the area by its light and colours are represented here.
• Paradis Foullis, a restaurant in an antique shop, at 17 rue de l’Ange, serving light food, coffee, homemade savoury tartes with tasty ingredients (such as foie gras, cheese). Enjoy a glass of chilled wine and extravagant desserts under a forest of Art Deco lights.

The Petit Train Jaune runs between Villefrance-de-Conflent and Latour-de-Carol. Best approached from Perpignan via the N116.

It’s well worth a visit as the scenery is beautiful and it’s a great way to travel.

Tip – Although expensive for a family, there is some dramatic scenery here. The cost can be managed if you don’t go all the way. The best scenery is towards the Mediterranean.
For the children: 63km is a long way to sit on a train – don’t travel the whole distance and have a break part way along to make a day of it.

Located in the Pyrénées Orientales (Eastern Pyrennean Mountains). Originally a Spanish castle, now in France in the Plateau de Rousillon area, which is a part of France since 1659, in the Eastern Pyrenean Mountains region. The Salses Castle is built on a narrow flat streak of land along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is through this passage that the army of Hannibal made its passage going to Italy in 218 BC. The name of the castle – Salses, comes from salinas fons, salty sources and it was given after the two sources of the salt water discovered during its construction. The village separated form the castle by the TGV rail bears its name – Salses-Le-Château. Among its habitants there is a known French writer Claude Simon (Nobel Prize 1985) who lives and has w winery there. Local cooperative of wine producers has a big store nearby the castle, with wines of local appellations – strong red of Fitou, sweet Muscat de Rivesaltes, popular Corbières and Côtes du Roussillon. The fortress of Salses is unique through its size, construction and colours. Interesting to visit.

History
This half buried in the ground fortress has been built between 1497 and 1504, by the Spanish architect Francisco Ramiro Lopez for the King Ferdinand of Aragon, King of Spain during the discovery of the New World on the place of the earlier castle, which stood there. The Salses Castle has been built to withstand the metal cannon bullets. Besieged it could house for months the garrison of 1500 men and 300 horses. Its walls are low and up to 9 meters thick. Taken by the French in 1642 and left by its Spanish garrison, the castle has been in the years after rebuilt by the famous French military architect Vauban. It is an example of the transition between medieval fortified château and the modern bastioned fortifications, revolutionary at the time.
The fortress is built from pale red brick and natural stone. It is very well preserved.
Today: A French National Monument, called officially La Forteresse de Salses, the Salses fortress is now a museum and houses a collection of modern, avanguard sculpture.

How to get there: By car – 16km from Perpignan by RN direction Narbonne ca. 10 minutes ride; from Leucate by RN direction Perpignan ca. 25 minutes ride, by freeway A 9 from Perpignan or Narbonne, accessible from exit 40 (riding from Montpellier) and exit 41(riding from Perpignan) , the castle is on the eastern side of the freeway. From the coast using local roads D11 or D83 driving direction Rivesaltes. By bicycle from Perpignan ca.24km or 35 minutes through small local roads.

It is the home of the fascinating Catalan Museum of Roussillon Folk Arts Traditions, known as Casa Pairal.

Don’t forget to see the amazing view from the top of the Homage Tower, with an excellent 360 view across the city, over to the mountains and across to the sea.

With live music regularly and a very laid back atmosphere, you are gauranteed a warm welcome. She also has the most amazing designer clothes shop alongside her cool bar.

It’s a playful place to be, the bathroom key is kept in a red box near the front-desk, and guests are invited to ask or look for it, as it is not possible to lock the common bathroom without the… key! There’s a children play-area for little children and the café/restaurant is filled with chairs, armchairs and tables of different sizes and shapes. You would also see books on the shelves on its walls. You could get a meal (drinks not included) for around 15€ Euros… all a bargain
